Router
A Router/Modem, now referred to as a Router is the device which connects you to the internet. Basically what a router does is make your premises just one of the many nodes on the internet with a unique external IP address. There are various means of getting a router, such as:
- You could purchase your own router at your cost. While this allows you to be able to choose your own device, it is certainly the more expensive way to go!
- Your ISP could give you a router but when that stops working you will have to purchase your own router and be without internet until you are able to get this done.
- Your ISP could loan you a router, "free to use", but when it stops working you will need to send it back and be without internet during the sending and recieving of the router. Them sending you a replacement is only if the one you have is under warranty. This means you could be without internet for a week or more unless you go out and buy your own. (see point 1.)
- East Coast Fibre, ECF, have introduced a lease plan where for as little as R30/m your internet down time is minimised to the same day delivery, if reported before 12pm, of a replacement router at no additional cost to you. Essentially the router is always ours and so is the resposiblity to get you back online with a replacement. Whether hit by lightning, Power Surges or the dog ate half your router we will replace it.
