Router

A Router/Modem, now referred to as a Router is the device which connects you to the internet. Basically what a router does is make your premises just one of the many nodes on the internet with a unique external IP address. There are various means of getting a router, such as:

  1. You could purchase your own router at your cost. While this allows you to be able to choose your own device, it is certainly the more expensive way to go!
  2. Your ISP could give you a router but when that stops working you will have to purchase your own router and be without internet until you are able to get this done.
  3. Your ISP could loan you a router, "free to use", but when it stops working you will need to send it back and be without internet during the sending and recieving of the router. Them sending you a replacement is only if the one you have is under warranty. This means you could be without internet for a week or more unless you go out and buy your own. (see point 1.)
  4. East Coast Fibre, ECF, have introduced a lease plan where for as little as R30/m your internet down time is minimised to the same day delivery, if reported before 12pm, of a replacement router at no additional cost to you. Essentially the router is always ours and so is the resposiblity to get you back online with a replacement. Whether hit by lightning, Power Surges or the dog ate half your router we will replace it.
